FREEDOM RIDERS
Volunteer Opportunities

Side walker:
This volunteer member of the "riding therapy team" participates directly in classes by assisting the rider and helping to ensure safety. Some riders need one or two Side walkers to stay with them throughout a lesson. The Side walkers assist the instructor with mounting/dismounting, and walk alongside the rider to give encouragement and/or support. Side walkers must attend a volunteer training workshop before participating in a session. Since volunteers are vital to our therapy program, a minimum commitment of one hour per week for a Session is needed. Volunteers must be able to stand/walk for up to an hour at a time. In addition, a Side walker may need to support the rider by keeping an arm in an elevated position resting lightly across the rider's thigh during a class. The minimum age for a Side walker is fourteen. Though experience with horses is not necessary, a Side walker should be comfortable around horses and committed to helping special needs individuals find success.

Voice-Side walker:
This Side walker is designated by the instructor to be the Voice for the "riding therapy team" during a class. As well as helping to ensure safety, the Voice is the member of the team with the responsibility of communicating with the rider, as needed, to help him/her understand and follow directions. Having only one member of the "team" talk helps the rider to concentrate and focus on what he/she has been directed to do. The requirements to be a Voice are the same as for a Side walker.

Horse handler:
When helping as a Horse handler, a volunteer participates in riding therapy classes. This member of the "riding therapy team" is responsible for directing the horse, as needed, to help maintain safety for the rider. A minimum commitment of one hour a week is required for the season. Horse handlers must attend a volunteer training workshop before participating in a session. The minimum age is fourteen. Horse handlers need to enjoy working with special needs individuals. While a background with horses is not necessary, it is very helpful. This volunteer must also be able to walk/stand leading a horse for an hour at a time.

Special Events:
We have openings for those folks who want to work directly with riders, but cannot make an extended commitment. Experienced Side walkers and Horse handlers are needed to help with horse shows, Special Olympics, open houses, etc., and especially to serve as occasional substitutes during regular classes.

Friends of Freedom Riders:
Maybe you are allergic to horses or not ready to spend an hour in a riding arena. We still have need of your time and talents. Painting, fencing, maintenance work, tack care, food preparation, and fund raising are but a few of our needs. Let us know your skills and we will find a place for you.

Volunteering is not only rewarding but fun!
